Fire Extinguishing
Fire extinguishers are an ‘active’ fire protection device utilised for the initial management of fires in an emergency. Fire extinguishers are categorised by the substances that they contain and by the class of fire.
Class A: Solids | Class B: Flammable Liquals | Class C: Flammable Gases | Class D: Metals | Class E: Electrical Apparatus | Class F: Cooking Oil
Fire Extinguishers
Fire extinguishers are an ‘active’ fire protection device utilised for the initial management of fires in an emergency. Fire extinguishers are categorised by the substances that they contain and by the class of fire.
Extinguishers are rated for use against only certain kinds of fires and are identified by an ‘ABCD marking’ which indicate the classes of fire against which they can be safely operated and utilised. The following table outlines the uses for the relevant class of fire extinguisher. The following are the general classes of fire extinguishers;
Class A: SOLIDS such as paper, wood, plastic etc
Class B: FLAMMABLE LIQUIDS such as paraffin, petrol, oil, etc
Class C: FLAMMABLE GASES such as propane, butane, methane, etc
Class D: METALS such as aluminium, magnesium, titanium, etc
Class E: Fires involving ELECTRICAL APPARATUS
Class F: Cooking OIL & FAT, etc
